The most common areas to transfer fat to are the face, breasts, and buttocks. Many of our patients have lost volume in their breasts after breast implant removal and fat transfer to the breast is a good option for these patients.

The most important criteria to consider is if you have enough fat to transfer. In order to transfer fat to the breast, we must have adequate fat to process and reinject. It is also important to have good tissue to place the fat into. We do not typically perform fat transfer at the same time as implant removal and capsulectomy. Typically, we like to wait at least 6 months between implant removal and capsulectomy and fat transfer.
Many factors affect the viability of the fat that is transferred to your breasts including general health, the area that the fat is removed from, how the fat is processed, age, tobacco use and the quality of the tissue the fat is injected into. We are excited about a new technology called Viality that we have been using for processing fat and are impressed with the improvement in fat viability and retention using this new technology. Most of the fat injected using this technology is still present 6 months from surgery.
Each patient will vary but fat injection into the breasts can improve shape and volume. We cannot achieve the same results as an implant but can usually increase cup size by about 1 cup size. Some women may require more than one treatment. It will take up to 6 months to see the final result of fat transfer.
